NBC Apologizes for Poorly Placed Ad
« on: August 03, 2012, 01:05:20 PM »
I saw it and thought it was weird but I figured they was just trying to promote their new show during a high ratings program

Immediately after NBC finished its broadcast of American gymnast Gabby Douglas' gold medal-winning performance on Thursday, the network cut to a promo spot for one of its new primetime shows, Animal Practice.
our editor recommends

The promo featured the show's star monkey, Crystal, competing on gymnastics rings -- which has drawn criticism on Twitter, as broadcaster Bob Costas had just been speaking of the historical significance of Douglas becoming the first African American woman to win the event. Tod Robberson of the Dallas Morning News called it "supremely thoughtless and undoubtedly insulting to lots of viewers."

On Friday, NBC issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, insisting that there was no intended racial significance.

"Gabby Douglas' gold medal performance last night was an historic and inspiring achievement. This spot promoting Animal Practice, which has run three times previously, is one in a series with an Olympic theme which have been scheduled for maximum exposure. Certainly no offense was intended."

The network has a several different promos for the show, including three with Olympic themes. With gymnastics and swimming providing a family audience, the network, it's been explained, decided to run the promo for Animal Practice, one of its more family-friendly shows this fall.

I saw it too and given the racist nature of this society perpetuated in large part by our divisive, corporate owned media knew it was no coincidence.  smh.  These sinister people are foul by nature and their insincere apologies are empty.

I knew there was gonna be an apology but I thought it would be because the monkey was imitating a black man on the rings. I didnt think anything about Gabby.

Projection.  Perception.  Two things that may benefit upon reflection.

SMDH,  white folk are forever trying to minimize any accomplishments black folk make in this country.   Are they (WP)  that insecure and are that intimidated by black people?

WOW,    racist white folk are asswipes.

how are commercials generally scheduled to air on tv? If it was scheduled to air at the same slot ahead of time, then how would they have known that Gabby was gonna win? If the russians had won, how would the airing of the commercial be perceived then? I guess I just need more information about this.

I am not saying it was on purpose.
NBC Olympic coverage is not live.
It's all-tape-delayed and edited before we see it.
We all new Gabby had won hours before.

But ... that ad was bought and paid for in a specific slot long before the results were known.
You can't  buy an ad right now to air like that.

I am not in TV so I am guessing on how it works...
The show is taped & edited to play  around pre paid commercial time slots. NBC got in trouble earlier this week for airing a promo of Missy Franklin Greeting her parents after her gold medal win.. but  oops they had not aired the race yet. The competitions are not even aired in order. Personally I think it just bad timing and editing.

I'm hardly inclined to give NBC the benefit of the doubt.  It's the raggedy ass network charged with perpetuating racist stereotypes two years ago by serving fried chicken in honor of Black History Month.  They're not slick, fuck them with extreme prejudice.

This is just a few people responding to a comment NBC made.
Nowhere in their statement indicated any type of outrage.
Several people saw it ( including me) and did not make a thread on it.
GP saw it, but only posted it because NBC released a statement.
So I don't see this as we are looking for something to be offended by.
Its quite possible NBC decided to say something on their own just in case.
