WASHINGTON — A government survey shows about 821,000 U.S. households lost access to basic banking services between January 2009 and June 2011.

Roughly 10 million U.S. households, or 8.2 percent, have no access to bank accounts, according to a survey conducted by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. That’s up from 7.7 percent in the FDIC’s 2009 survey.

And an even larger percentage of Americans are relying on high-interest alternatives, even those with traditional bank accounts. The survey found 28.3 percent either lacked bank accounts or used payday loans, check-cashing services and other alternatives as of June 2011. That’s up from 25.6 percent in the previous survey.

The survey found 21.4 percent of black families and 20.1 percent of Hispanic families had no banking services.

wow..thats kind of disturbing...i have one question though.. are non american blacks factored in?

being un banked is not the same as saying that people dont have savings...many informal savings and loan arrangements in the black community.. particularly among foreign born black folks....

I didn't begin seeing that "payday loan" mess until I lived in the south (Atlanta) for a few years.. They also have another loan call "title loan", you can borrow cash against your 'car title"..  If you don't pay it back they repossess your car..  These type of businesses push against the limits of the law while taking advantage of poor people.. Most of they're tactics are illegal, one could find themselves in a mountain of debt searching for a "quick fix".. I don't understand why the Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will not shut them down...

Early detection is a key to surviving the disease. Unfortunately, we see racial, ethnic, geographic and socio-economic disparities in access to breast health care, which in turn leads to disparities in survival rates.

Make sense, Devo, that thought never cross my mind...  In Atlanta those shit's are on every other street, you see them more than liquor stores.. And in no way am I saying I prefer to see liquor stores on every block in the hood..

Of course they are factored , hence a reason for the article. When the market, especially in home ownership was booming, all types of no money down deals and sousou down payments were accepted by many robbers to purchase homes and now that the market has tanked for folks in the so called middle and working class poor, this is also supposed to be a new enlightening. Many people have  always known how it works and here is another BS take on reality. Many people have taken advantage of sousou's and the like with their non American born folks and still do. Walmart and check cashing businesses have always made a huge killing  and offer prepaid  credit cards.

I don't understand why the Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will not shut them down...

It's the same with the Reverse Mortgage game. After a while they file as a loss and come back with a new name.

probably , non american blacks are still classified as African american ,

but look no farther then the sheer number of check cashing places in low income areas and these numbers make sense .

sousou is different but i dont care not having a bank account and not know how to manage it, is the result of poor upbringing

sousou is alive and well in the immigrant community.....an underground banking system of sorts...

check cashing places are everywhere in poor and working class areas of nyc..gouging the poor..russell simmons tried to get in on this unbanked segment of the community with his russ card.. highly questionable and taking advantage of the ignorance of poor blacks....  not knowing how to manage personal finances is definitely a problem...it should be taught in school.. in fact it was taught to my children as part of their curriculum in economics in high school....

sousou is alive and well..we had one at my job..lol.. those of us that participated had carribbean roots..with the exception of one sister from ghana.. it is a help to some people.. cant knock it..

I agree with you the housing scandal was caused by folks preying on the ignorance of  folks that didnt take the time to fully understand what they were getting into.. smh.....the next bubble to burst is student loans..... always folks ready and willing to prey on the poor and the uneducated..

What's funny to ME is that 21% MEANS that 79% DO have bank accounts. It's not like 100% of any race has bank accounts. This kind of shit is somewhat laughable.

:72:. not to mention those "checking cashing" places are just fronts for banks so they wont have to open up a regular bank in poor areas. so of course poor folks going to  go there.

I get where you're coming from, nothing is ever 100 however, why let silly little things called facts get in the way of a slow news day.  I agree that having an account is important however, you can't exactly force someone to get one.

Hey Bratt, I would much rather these type of companies be "done away" with all together vs it being limited... However, if what Devo, stated is true about them being owned by these BIG banks (which I now believe, need to do some research, though) I don't see them going away at all...
